Claude Free Credits: October 2026 Guide
Quick answer: Anthropic has given out Claude credits in three different ways over the past few weeks. The best known one, a one-time Claude Code cloud credit of $100 on Pro and $250 on Max, closed for new claims at 11:59 PM Pacific on October 7, 2026. If you claimed it, you can spend it until November 4. On October 7, together with the new Haiku 5.5 model, Anthropic began rolling out a monthly API credit for Max and Team plans: $100 on Max 5x, $200 on Max 20x and up to $500 pooled on Team. A day earlier it expanded Claude Startups, which gives young companies a free year of Claude Team and $1,000 in API credit.

If your feed has been full of "Claim $250 credit" screenshots lately, there is a reason. Anthropic, the company behind Claude, has been unusually generous this autumn. The catch is that the offers overlap, follow different rules, and two of them changed status in the last 48 hours. Some people are still trying to claim a credit that has already closed, while others have not noticed a newer one that renews every month.

We use Claude every day in client projects at Buinsoft, so we went through Anthropic's announcements, its help center articles and the claim screens themselves. Below is what each offer is, who qualifies, what happened on October 7 and 8, and what you can still use today.

All Claude credit offers at a glance

Status as of October 8, 2026:

Offer Who gets it Amount Status
Claude Code cloud session credit Individual Pro and Max subscribers active on September 23 $100 on Pro or $250 on Max, one time Claims closed on October 7. Claimed credit is usable until November 4
Monthly API credit Max and Team plans $100 on Max 5x, $200 on Max 20x, up to $500 on Team, every month Rolling out since October 7
Claude Startups Companies founded in the last 5 years or funded in the last 2 A free year of Claude Team plus $1,000 in API credit Open for applications since October 6
Free limit reset Eligible Pro, Max and Team users One reset of the session or weekly limit Open, expires on October 22

What happened on October 7 and 8

Three things landed within roughly a day of each other.

  • October 7: Claude Haiku 5.5 launched. It is Anthropic's new small and fast model, priced at $0.10 per million input tokens and $0.50 per million output tokens for requests up to 100,000 tokens. Anthropic says it costs about 75 percent less to run than Haiku 4.5 on average and calls it its fastest model so far.
  • October 7: monthly API credits for Max and Team. In the same announcement, Anthropic said Max and Team subscribers would receive a monthly credit for the Claude Platform API, rolling out over that week.
  • October 7 to 8: the cloud credit window closed. The last moment to claim the Claude Code cloud credit was 11:59 PM Pacific on October 7. That was 06:59 UTC on October 8, or 08:59 in Prague.

Anthropic also halved the cache read price of Sonnet 5.5 the same day, from $0.20 to $0.10 per million tokens, which it estimates makes Sonnet 5.5 about 20 percent cheaper on most agentic work. On October 6, a day before all this, it had expanded the Claude Startups program during SF Tech Week.

Today, October 8, the monthly API credit is still being rolled out. Anthropic's help center says the offer reaches accounts over a few days, so an eligible account that does not show it yet is most likely waiting its turn.

1. The Claude Code cloud credit: closed for new claims

On September 23, Anthropic moved Claude Code cloud sessions out of research preview. A cloud session runs Claude Code on Anthropic's servers instead of your own machine, so a long task keeps going after you close the laptop. You can start one from claude.ai/code, from the desktop or mobile app, or from the terminal with claude --cloud. Each session works on its own branch and copy of your repository, which is why it needs a connected GitHub account.

To get people to try it, Anthropic gave existing subscribers a one-time credit:

  • Pro: $100 of cloud session credit.
  • Max: $250 of cloud session credit.
  • Who qualified: individual Pro and Max subscribers whose subscription was active when the promotion started on September 23. Reports on the terms say Team and Enterprise plans, free trials and accounts with overdue payments were excluded.
  • How to claim: a claim link on claude.ai or the /claim-credit command in the CLI, after accepting the promotional credit terms.

The credit sits outside your normal usage limits and is used automatically whenever a cloud session runs. Anthropic summed it up in one line: "If you hit a limit locally, keep going in the cloud until your credit runs out." When the credit is used up, cloud sessions count against your regular plan limits. There is no separate charge for the cloud machine itself.

Where it stands now

The claim window has closed. We have found no announcement of an extension, and Anthropic has not published any process for late claims. If you claimed in time, nothing changes for you: the balance stays usable until 11:59 PM Pacific on November 4, 2026, which is 08:59 on November 5 in Prague. Whatever is left after that expires.

If you still have a balance, spend it on work that benefits from running unattended. Dependency upgrades across a repository, a large test run, a refactor you keep postponing or a first draft of missing documentation are all good candidates. If you believe you were eligible and never saw the offer, you can contact Anthropic support through the help center, but there is no published route for exceptions.

2. Monthly API credits for Max and Team: new and recurring

This is the offer that matters most from here on, because it repeats every month. Anthropic describes it as monthly Claude Platform API credits for Max and Team plans that work on any model, including Haiku 5.5, "in your code or third-party harnesses."

Plan Monthly API credit
Max 5x $100
Max 20x $200
Team $20 per Standard seat plus $100 per Premium seat, pooled and capped at $500
Free, Pro, Enterprise Not eligible

Anthropic's own Team example: three Standard seats and two Premium seats add up to $260 a month. Five Premium seats reach the $500 cap on their own. Discounted Team plans for nonprofits and scientists earn the same amounts per seat.

How to claim it

  1. Open claude.ai in a web browser. The claim cannot be made in the iOS or Android app, even if you pay through the app.
  2. On Max, go to Settings and then Billing. On Team, an Owner or Primary Owner goes to Organization settings and then Billing.
  3. In the API credits section, choose Link organization, then select an existing Claude Console organization or create a new one. Sign in to the Console with the same email address you use on claude.ai.
  4. Review the Supplemental Credit Terms and confirm. You do not need a payment method on the Claude Platform.

New subscribers must spend seven days on an eligible plan before the offer appears. Choose the Console organization with care: a plan can link to only one organization, and you cannot change that link yourself later. It takes a support request.

What the credit covers

The credit can be spent on the Claude API (the Messages and Message Batches APIs), the Console Playground, Claude Managed Agents and the Claude Agent SDK. It cannot be spent on interactive Claude Code in the terminal, IDE, desktop app or browser, on extra usage inside the Claude apps, or on Claude through Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud Vertex AI or Microsoft Foundry. It also leaves your usage limits in Claude and Claude Code unchanged.

The Claude Code exclusion is what most of the early criticism is about, since many Max subscribers pay mainly for Claude Code. Anthropic's wording makes the purpose clear, though: the credit is meant for building your own tools, apps and agents that call the API.

The rules that will catch people out

  • Use it or lose it. Unused credit expires at the end of each billing cycle and does not roll over. Annual subscribers also receive it monthly.
  • It is spent first. The monthly credit is used before any credit you bought yourself.
  • It is shared. Everyone with an API key in the linked organization draws from the same balance. If several people or projects use it, set workspace spend limits in the Console.
  • At zero, requests stop. If the organization has no purchased credit and auto reload is off, API calls pause until the next monthly credit arrives. Nothing is ever charged to your Claude subscription.
  • Cancelling ends it. If you cancel, downgrade to a plan that does not qualify or ask for a refund, new credits stop. Credit you already have stays usable until it expires.

What $100 a month actually buys

Paired with Haiku 5.5, the monthly credit goes further than the number suggests. Take a support ticket classifier that sends about 2,000 tokens to the model and gets about 300 tokens back for each ticket:

Model Price per million tokens (input / output) Cost per ticket Tickets per $100
Claude Haiku 5.5 $0.10 / $0.50 $0.00035 about 285,000
Claude Haiku 4.5 $1.00 / $5.00 $0.0035 about 28,500
Claude Sonnet 5.5 $2.00 / $10.00 $0.007 about 14,300

These are Anthropic's list prices for requests up to 100,000 tokens. Above that size Haiku 5.5 costs $0.50 and $2.50 per million tokens, and caching or batching changes the real bill. The order of magnitude is what counts here: a Max 5x subscriber can run a serious prototype, an internal summarization job or a test agent for a full month at no extra cost.

3. Claude Startups: a free year of Claude Team and $1,000

On October 6, during SF Tech Week, Anthropic opened its Claude Startups program to more founders. Accepted companies get:

  • A free year of Claude Team for companies new to Team, with up to five Premium seats. Anthropic values this at $6,000, based on $100 per seat per month billed annually.
  • $1,000 in API credit as soon as the application is approved.
  • The Claude Startup Stack: discounts and credits worth up to $45,000 from partner companies, each under its own terms.
  • Office hours with Anthropic's Applied AI team, hands-on help getting a connector or plugin listed in the Claude Marketplace, and invitations to community events.

The eligibility rule is short: your company was founded in the last five years or raised funding in the last two. Applications go through claude.com/programs/startups. Press coverage of the program terms adds a few practical points. You need a Claude Console account and an email address on your company's domain, the $1,000 credit expires six months after it is granted, and it only works on Anthropic's own API, so it cannot be used on Bedrock or Vertex AI. Companies that already pay for Team do not get the free year.

Anthropic puts the total at up to $7,000 in Claude products and credits. For a five person startup that would otherwise pay for Team seats, that is real money. If you are building a product on Claude, the office hours may turn out to be worth even more than the credit.

Still open until October 22: the free limit reset

One more giveaway is easy to overlook because it is not a credit. Since the launch of Opus 5.5 in late September, eligible Pro, Max and Team users have had a one-time "Reset for free" button. Depending on the reset you received, it restores either your five-hour session limit or your weekly limit immediately.

You will find it on the web or in the desktop app under Settings and then Usage, in the Resets section. It is not available in the mobile app or in Claude Code in the terminal, although the restored limits apply there too, because limits are shared across your account. The reset currently shown in accounts expires on October 22, and the exact date appears next to the button. A reset cannot be undone, and it is lost if you downgrade or cancel before using it. Keep it for a day when a limit stops you in the middle of important work.

Why Anthropic is giving so much away

Taken together, the offers point the same way. Each one moves users a step deeper into the platform: from a chat subscription to Claude Code, from Claude Code on a laptop to Claude Code in the cloud, and from subscriptions to the API, where companies build products that run every day. Our reading is that a credit is a cheap way for Anthropic to get a developer to build something that then keeps running, and paying, long after the promotion ends.

The pricing moves fit the same picture. Haiku 5.5 arrived with prices up to 90 percent lower on short requests, aimed at high volume work such as classification, summaries and customer support, where price often decides which model gets used. For buyers this competition is good news: capable models keep getting cheaper, and the free allowances keep getting more useful.

What we recommend for businesses

  1. Check what you already have. Look under Settings and then Usage for a cloud credit balance or a free reset, and under Settings and then Billing for the API credit offer.
  2. Link the API credit to a separate Console organization used for experiments and kept apart from any production organization, because the link is hard to undo.
  3. Pick one concrete use case for the month. Ticket triage, invoice data extraction, meeting summaries or an internal search agent are good fits for Haiku 5.5.
  4. Set spend limits and watch usage, so a test script cannot drain a shared balance in one afternoon.
  5. Do not build production on promotional credit alone. Monthly credits stop if you change plans, and startup credits expire. Budget for the real cost from day one and treat the credit as a discount.

Frequently asked questions

Can I still claim the $100 or $250 Claude Code cloud credit?

No. New claims closed at 11:59 PM Pacific on October 7, 2026, which was 06:59 UTC on October 8, and no extension has been announced. Credit that was claimed in time can be used until November 4.

Do Claude Pro subscribers get the new monthly API credit?

No. The monthly API credit is limited to Max and Team plans, including discounted Team plans. Free, Pro and Enterprise plans are not eligible. Pro users can still use the one-time free limit reset if their account shows one.

Can I spend the monthly API credit in Claude Code?

Not in interactive Claude Code sessions. The credit covers the Claude API, the Console Playground, Claude Managed Agents and the Claude Agent SDK. It does not cover Claude Code in the terminal, IDE, desktop app or browser, or extra usage in the Claude apps.

Does unused monthly API credit roll over?

No. It expires at the end of each billing cycle, and annual subscribers receive it monthly too. It is also spent before any credit you have bought yourself.

Who can apply for Claude Startups?

Companies founded in the last five years or funded in the last two. Accepted startups that are new to Claude Team get a free year with up to five Premium seats, plus $1,000 in API credit. Applications go through claude.com/programs/startups.

When does the free limit reset expire?

The reset offered to eligible Pro, Max and Team users after the Opus 5.5 launch expires on October 22, 2026. The exact date for your account is shown under Settings and then Usage.
